Course description

Night photograhy course in Sydney.

Night photography has the ability to take a scene and bathe it in an unusual light. It adds an element of mood and uniqueness that is absent in the daytime. In this four week course learn to capture the mood of a night scene and produce striking images with an experienced professional photographer. Manual SLR skills required.

This course will open the door to a whole new world for photography, where the reality of daylight is transformed from the mundane to something mysterious and unfamiliar. Explore the creative opportunities that night light offers on 2 photoshoots, discovering how the camera sees in darkness and learning ways to play with light.

The tutor will guide you how to use your camera to read what the eye cannot see, as well as how to translate a scene in different ways. The course will also provide the opportunity to observe the work of photographers who use creative techniques in low light, and to experiment yourself with some of them.

Course content
  • Discuss previous experience and difficulties
  • Working with the camera’s metering options to read night light
  • Different lighting – dusk, the darkness of nature, citylight, artificial and introduced
  • Black and white versus colour
  • Observe nightscape photographs, discussing approach
  • Observe experimental techniques used by photographers, including 'Light Painting'
  • During photoshoots learn how to read various kinds of night light, from cityscapes to nature
  • Explore the camera’s alternative white balance options
  • Experiment with a range of different techniques such as playing with movement, painting with light
  • Explore the opportunities of flash combined with long exposure
  • Review the results in the final class in a constructive supportive environment
  • Deal with any further problems discovered during shoots

By the end of this course you will have:

  • learned how to use the metering of their camera to assess low and nightlight
  • practiced how to manipulate low light in various ways
  • observed the approach of photographers, both documentary and experimental
  • gained practical experience on photoshoots
  • improved their way of seeing at night, appreciating the opportunities offered
  • explored playing with movement in low light and 'Light Painting'
  • experimented with various creative techniques available at night
  • gained confidence to experiment and explore nightscapes
