Course description

Travel photography is about creating inspiring images of places and people that serve as lasting impressions of your travel experience. Learn how to visually engage with your environment to capture the details that make a destination special. Taught by a professional photographer whose love of travel inspired her to make a career change to being behind the camera. This course is presented in a workshop format, which mixes hands-on experiences with open discussion. The classroom sessions cover various technical and creative aspects of travel photography as well as exploring the practicalities of travel with the aspiration of creative memorable imagery. Two of the four sessions are field trips held on weekends. Each will be held at a different city-based location with specific times to be negotiated in the first class. These shoots are designed to create a travelling experience and increase your shooting efficiency along with deepening your knowledge of cultural significance. Need: - Students should have gone beyond the basics and know how to manually operate their camera. - A DSRL or mirrorless camera is required for every session. Other compact cameras are not suitable for this course. - Bring two travel photos to the first class. One that was taken by you. The other from a magazine/ book/website. They MUST be printed images.

Students' work will be reviewed with constructive feedback from the class and tutor in the following session.

Need:

  • Students should have gone beyond the basics and know how to manually operate their DSLR. A compact camera with or without manual option is not suitable.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • What equipment to take on your travels
  • Care of equipment, including safety issues
  • Special considerations, such as cultural awareness and legal requirements
  • Observe and discuss a stimulating range of travel photography
  • Looking at light to capture mood
  • What is needed to successfully photograph people
  • How to tell a story
  • Provide practical experience in a range of locations and light
  • How to capture a sense of place
  • Exploring the options of the urban environment
  • Looking at more interesting ways to photograph icons of architecture
  • Looking at detail and specific themes
  • Providing practical feedback in a constructive environment following shoots
  • The challenges of safeguarding data while travelling

Objectives

The intended Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows. By the end of this course the student will have:

  • A greater awareness of the practicalities of photography while travelling
  • More ideas through observing and discussing inspiring photographs
  • Gained practical knowledge with light and location on a range of photo shoots
  • Improved skills in how to capture a sense of place

  • You will need to bring your own camera, lenses, batteries, tripods to ALL classes. The safety and security of your equipment when on the street is your responsibility.
  • Pen & paper to write notes.
