Course description

Learn natural light portraiture photography in Sydney.

Great Portrait photography doesn’t have to rely on expensive studio lighting equipment. Some of the best portraits by some of the greatest photographers were achieved by simply working with available light. This course focuses on the skill and understanding required for Natural Light portraiture. This will include an overview of relevant portrait photography as well as aspects of composition, lighting and working with people. Each class will have a theoretical component followed by practical demonstrations and exercises. Homework assignments will be given and reviewed as a group in class.

This course teaches you the process of taking a good photographic ‘location’ portrait and will show you how to light and arrange people with a minimum of fuss, but still get a good professional looking image using Natural Light. Practical exercises will provide the opportunity to apply new skills with the assistance of the tutor.

  • Camera Skills or equivalent as well as
  • Creative Skills or equivalent
  • Digital or Film SLR Camera
  • Tripod
Course content

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Introduction and examples of important portrait photographers and different genres of portrait photography
  • Discussion of relevant aspects of portrait photography – Mood, style, location and posing
  • Composition, cropping, perspective, focal length and depth of field in theory and practice with homework
  • Lighting quality, direction, colour, reflection, diffusion, interior and exterior in theory and practice with homework
  • Posing Angles, perspective, cropping and direction in theory and practice with homework
  • Photo shoot on location
Outcomes

By the end of this course you will have:

  • exposure to different styles and genres of portrait photography
  • an understanding of relevant components of portrait photography
  • knowledge of lighting options and characteristics
  • knowledge of composition, posing and direction in portrait photography
  • an approach to portrait photography that will allow further progression of visual understanding and increased confidence in working with people
Other information
  • For the practical shoots you will need to bring your own camera, lenses, batteries, tripod, and if you’re using a film camera, at least one roll of film. The safety and security of your equipment when on the street is your responsibility
  • If using a Film SLR you will need to purchase your own film for the practical exercises and have them processed and printed at a lab. Digital SLR users will need to pay for printing their images only
  • Practical shoot times and locations to be negotiated in class
