Course description

Learn Metal Smithing in Sydney.

Silver Smithing is the art of creating out of silver or other precious metals beautiful jewellery, as well as hollow-ware; dishes, bowls, cups, and flatware (plates). Be introduced to the traditional silversmithing skills and understand the similarites of silversmithing to jewellery making. You will also learn many different techniques such as forging, casing and soldering as well as decorative finishes, that will make your piece an unique masterpiece.

The individual tuition will ensure that you complete a metal piece with the confidence you need to create more for yourself, to give as gifts or even sell in your own business.

Ideal for…

This course is designed for all levels.

You will design and make
  • Either a napkin ring/wrist cuff or a tea light holder
  • Option: If you would like to create your piece in silver, please purchase the silver (200mm x 60mm x 0.7mm, supplier: A&E Metal www.aemetal.com.au) and bring it to class
Course content
  • Measuring, cutting and texturing metal
  • Bending and forming metal into a 3D form
  • Soldering
  • How to use a blow torch
  • Finishes to give your work the professional look
Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • accurately measure and cut metal for soldering
  • safely use a blow torch and drill
  • create texture with hammers, punches and a rolling mill
  • solder metal
  • finish the edges of metal
What we provide
  • Base metal (copper or brass)
  • Apron
  • Tools, chemicals and solder
Please bring to class
  • Notebook and pen
  • Textured paper, dried leaves, lace that can be used to emboss the metal (Please note, these materials will be damaged/destroyed by the process)
Other Information
  • Closed-in shoes required
  • Please don’t wear loose clothing
  • Long hair must be tied back
