Course description

Learn the essentials of picture framing in Sydney.

This two-day workshop is a comprehensive introduction to the world of picture framing. Whether you are looking to work in the framing industry or plan to make frames at home, this course will expose you to all the information, resources and suppliers you need to pursue your framing goals.

You will learn the fundamental techniques required to make a picture frame – whilst being exposed to the correct trade terminology and framing language – and will have the opportunity to discuss areas such as frame design, conservation framing, identification and care of artworks, specialised mounting techniques and framing theory on a professional and enjoyable level.

Course content

Students will be instructed in framing a small ‘work on paper’ of their choice (this can be a drawing, photograph, certificate etc. but must not be larger than an A4 sheet of paper). After observing a series of tutor-led demonstrations, students will be assisted in making their own frames using entry-level framing equipment. The key framing methods learnt here will enable students to develop their own framing designs and solutions in the future.

The course schedule is as follows:

Day 1

  • Why we frame things / the function of frames
  • PowerPoint presentation and image-assisted discussion covering: frame production methods and equipment (from basic to advanced); the negative effects of poor framing on works of art; oversize frames; and artist’s/signature frames
  • Framing studio layouts and positive workshop practices
  • Visualisation and design
  • Consideration of materials
  • Planning and measuring up
  • Cutting and joining the frame
  • Discussion on different frame finishes

Day 2

  • The matboard package / cutting a window mat
  • Hinging and mounting methods / Japanese hinging / specialised tapes / clear film / supports etc
  • Assembling the frame / fitting up
  • Suppliers / professional organisations / further reading
  • Future directions
  • Summary and final words
