Course description

Enrol in our Fabric Block Printing course and learn the fine points of the ancient Fabric art of Block Printing and Design with Sydney Community College your centre for continuing education in Sydney.

In this hands-on course you will enjoy creating designs on a cotton scarf using traditional block printing techniques.

Create a unique lino block and use authentic Indian wood blocks.

No previous design or printing experience required.

If you want to learn to block print fabric in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Agenda

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given.

  • Appreciate the history and tradition of relief printing on fabric;
  • Preparation of fabric and printing materials and equipment;
  • Learn how to cut a lino block;
  • Print a cotton scarf using a combination of blocks;
  • Understand multi colour printing.
Objectives

By the end of the course the student will:

  • Be able to identify block printed fabrics;
  • Have experienced relief printing;
  • Have learned to cut a design on a lino block;
  • Have printed a cotton scarf;
  • Have been introduced to a variety of methods to produce block prints on fabrics.
Materials Provided
  • Printing pastes, lino cutting tools, lino block, wood blocks, cotton scarf.
Please Bring
  • This is a practical course, strength and dexterity are required.
  • Drawing pad, pens, pencils etc for designing;
  • Ruler;
  • Additional item to print on (time permitting) eg. a white T-Shirt or light coloured cotton fabric which has been washed;
  • Please wear closed in shoes and old clothes
  • Students should bring an apron or smock to protect clothing;
  • Students should bring rubber gloves and rags for clean up;
