Course description

This hands-on free form weaving workshop led by textile artist and designer Lorna Murray will introduce you to the process of loom weaving. This is a great introduction workshop where you will learn how to warp up your timber loom and explore different tapestry weaving techniques using a variety of colourful textile materials. Opportunities are here to explore your interest in colour mixing and surface textures in a supportive workshop environment.

In this one day workshop you will learn:

  • How to warp up a timber loom
  • The basic skills required to produce visually beautifully tapestries on a small scale.
  • How to implement elements of colour, line, tone shape, form and texture into your weaving.
  • Basics of colour theory

At the end of this five hour workshop you’ll take home your small tapestry weaving completed or near completion.

Please bring to class
  • Weaving loom. Can be purchased from Spotlight or online stores such as www.loomandspindle.com.au. (The loom can be of any size but as a guide, approx 25 -50cm wide x 25-50cm tall)
  • Tapestry needles x 2
  • A range of weaving materials such as – hand dyed wool yarns,

linen threads, cotton embroidery threads, string, silk threads roving, raffia, crochet threads and machine threads

  • Scissors
  • Cup and saucer for drinking tea

About your tutor

Lorna Murray is a leading Australian textile artist with a vibrant creative practice spanning the past 20 years.
Her passion for textiles is infectious. Her work traverses art, fashion and design disciplines. She exhibits in galleries nationally and internationally and also launches a range of limited edition women’s apparel during spring and summer each year.

Lorna’s other great passion is being an educator in the fields of textiles, fashion and art. She runs workshops, teaches art in schools and lectures at university. Through relaxed and enjoyable workshops Lorna shares her extensive knowledge and practical skills among her students.
