Course description

Learn sewing alterations in Sydney.

Do you have an outfit that no longer fits or needs to be fixed? Did you buy a garment that you never wear but just needs adjusting in some way to become fabulous!

Here is a way to revive your wardrobe, complete those sewing projects, and learn some new skills in a relaxing environment.
From darning, patchwork, mending, sewing hems and alterations, to soft furnishing projects like curtains, cushions, bed linen, bags, soft sewn hats, children’s and clothing.

This is an opportunity to use up the bag of gorgeous fabrics you have tucked away in a drawer. Longed to make something particular but just need a gentle push and affirmation? The Tutor will be happy to help you tackle any or all of these projects in a relaxed informative non-threatening environment.

You can either bring your own projects, or follow a program provided by the Tutor to learn a variety of basic skills and learn to sew. Each week there will be demonstrations for techniques you may wish to learn or incorporate or improve your skills.

If you want to Learn about Sewing in Sydney, then this course is for you.

  • Threading and using the sewing machine

  • Gathers, Ruffles, Bias, Piping. Mitred Corners
  • Sewing your own clothing
  • Adjustments and alterations to patterns
Outcomes

By the end of this course you will have learned:

  • some new sewing skills
  • how to made good headway on, or finished, a sewing project
Please bring to class
  • Any projects that you have been worked on at home, or want to start
  • Material you are keen to work with
  • Pen and notepad

The following items must be supplied by students and will be needed on the first night:

  • 3 meters of calico.
  • Clear plastic Janome bobbins x 1 pkt of two
  • Pins and hand sewing needles
  • 1 reel of white and 1 reel of dark coloured sewing thread
  • 1 pair of fabric cutting scissors
  • 1 pair of small thread cutting scissors or clippers
  • Measuring tape
  • Notebook, ruler, pen and pencil to take notes
  • You are welcome to bring along your own machine (if portable) if you would prefer to learn on it

NEEDLES: The machines on campus take standard domestic sewing machine needles. They will have 130/705 H on the packaging somewhere to tell you they are domestic type, which is different from the code for the size of the needle (an 80 or 90 size needle is best for use with sew-all thread).
BOBBINS: They must be plastic, not metal. They must be designed for TOP LOADING or “Drop In” machines. The best bet is to buy a pack that says it’s suitable for Singer Drop In machines or Janome Drop In machines (either one will work on both machines). Avoid “universal” bobbins as there is no one-size-fits-all bobbin.
THREAD: a quality thread brand is recommended. Some of the more common household brands are Gutermann, Rasant, Mettler, Aurifil.

Other information

Basic kits with the bare essentials are available for purchase directly from the tutor for $20 (cash only). Each kit contains:

  • Glass head pins
  • White sewing thread
  • A tape measure
  • Thread clippers
  • A cream zipper
  • 2 x clear plastic bobbins
