Learn to Crochet in Sydney

By the end of the course, you will be hooked on crochet and yarning about it to everyone.

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures. Amigurumi was made popular by Japanese Artisans over 500 years. In Japanese, Amigurumi means crochet stuffed doll. As a learned technique, it will provide hours of creativity.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, it is intended that learners will have:

  • learned how to hold the hook and yarn;
  • learned the basics of crochet stitches use the anatomy of a crochet stitch to create shape;
  • learned to identify and count stitches learn basic increase and decrease;

Ideal for 

Any learner with a desire to be creative.

Course content

The learning is practical and is spread over 4 weeks. Students work at their own pace.

  • Learn to hold hook, yarn, make a slip knot, commence and make a chain, count the chain.
  • Learn to make a circle, join it. Work in the circle.
  • Learn a new stitch, practice the stitch.
  • Use the circle to make the base of a character.
  • Learn to count the base, attach new yarn,
  • Work out the mathematics to implement an increase, work the increase and start to make the body.
  • Use maths to decrease the work,
  • Learn to finish the work, so the top has a clean finish.
  • Add features such as buttons or beads for eyes or other character building techniques.

Please bring to class

  • tape measure,
  • scissors,
  • safety pins (5)
  • tablet OR pen and notepad for taking notes

Materials provided:

  • 1x crochet hook
  • 2x stitch markers 
  • Enough yarn to make the project. This may be 1 big ball or 2 small balls depending on how many colours students want to use 
  • Extra colours of yarn to make eyes, nose etc.
