This course is designed to introduce people to the Art of Calligraphy, its rich history and an understanding of the development of our Modern Alphabet.

This series of workshops is designed to introduce you to the Contemporary styles or scripts of Copperplate, Modern Pointed Pen, Uncial Hand, Italic, Foundational and Medieval Gothic Hand. This workshop focuses on Medieval French Batarde.

Course content

In this workshop we will be looking at all things French Gothic, studying Medieval Batarde. We will trace its origins, referencing historical manuscripts.
Concentration will be on letter construction, form and spacing of both upper- and lower-case letters. Period decoration and gilding will be included.

Topics covered:

• pen patterns
• script style, construction and characteristics
• working with ink, gouache and other mediums
• period decoration and gilding
• history of the script

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course students should be able to:

• write with a chisel shaped nib
• construct letters and numerals of a set script
• achieve spacial awareness
• achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape
• achieve an understanding of layout skills
• apply gilding techniques
• apply all learned skills to a piece of work or project.

Please come prepared

If you will purchase a kit please bring $30 cash (not included in the course fee), as well as:

• Ruler
• Water jar
• Pencil

If you wish to purchase ALL materials yourself, please bring the following:

• A4 or A3 bond layout pad – Canson or similar brand from art stores
• Chisel shaped nibs such Brause, Speedball C NIBS, William Mitchell – large, medium and small size.
• Pen holder
• Ink – Black Sumi ink or Chinese stick ink
• Gouache – a few different colours – black & a primary colour set
• Ruler, pencil HB
• Water jar, rag
• Other supplies will be advised if needed throughout the course.

• Long hair must be tied back
