Learn Sign Language in Sydney with this beginners class.

Sign Language 1 offers you the unique and fun experience of communicating visually using Auslan, the natural language of the Australian Deaf Community.

This course is a pre-requisite for Sign Language 2.

If you want to learn basic Sign Language in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Ideal for students who

• want to be introduced to Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and deaf culture

• are managers, employers, teachers, health professionals, friends and colleagues of deaf people
• are interested in working with deaf people

Course content

This course will give you:

• an appreciation for Auslan
• access to genuine Auslan with deaf teachers
• a chance to develop practical Auslan skills
• the opportunity to learn through fun and informal classes
• a good introduction to Auslan before committing to accredited courses

Outcomes

By the end of this course, taught by both deaf and hearing teachers, you will have learned how to:

• use basic communication skills in Auslan
• use visual-gestural communication strategies
• identify the Deaf community
• find effective ways to communicate with deaf people

It is intended that the above topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Adult education classes can vary as parts of the curriculum are adapted to suit the needs of the group.
